Wondering what to do on Mother’s Day weekend? Brunch is always an option, but Mom might really appreciate a different approach this year. From sentimental crafts you can do at home to adventures in the Santa Clarita Valley and beyond, we’ve got five new ideas to celebrate Mother’s Day together.
Create a Mother’s Day memory journal.
Pick up a blank journal and start a new tradition! Every year, ask each child to write or draw something about Mom that they love. Then ask Mom to write down a few favorite memories about her own mother. The end result will create a chain of love for Mom to revisit and cherish year after year.
Spend the day in Old Town Newhall.
Santa Clarita’s oldest neighborhood is also the hottest destination for shopping, dining, gallery-hopping and entertainment. Download the Old Town Newhall Walking Tour app on Google Play or the App Store for an easy way to explore. Pick up tickets for The Universe (101), an amazing humor and magic show currently running at The Main theatre — there’s even a Mother’s Day matinee. Or discover more about Santa Clarita history at the William S. Hart Museum, Heritage Junction or the Western Walk of Stars, a favorite destination for unexpected fun.
Make a thumbprint pendant necklace.
This is a great project to involve even the littlest of kids. Pick up some oven-bake clay, an ink pad and a pretty piece of cord at the craft store. Roll a small piece of clay into a ball, then flatten into a disk. Press the child’s thumb onto the ink pad, then firmly (but gently) onto the clay disk. Let the ink dry, then poke a hole through the clay with a toothpick — this is where you’ll thread the cord. Place the pendant on a baking sheet and bake according to the directions on the package. Once it’s baked and cooled, thread the cord through.
Enjoy a day of trail riding.
Looking for an adventurous gift for Mom to enjoy beyond just Mother’s Day weekend? Then visit Santa Clarita Valley Equestrian Center for a day of trail riding. Unplug and connect with nature on this expert-guided horseback tour. First-time riders, groups and guests as young as six can come along for the ride (accompanied by a parent or guardian). Don’t forget to book trail rides at least two days in advance of the event date.
Take in some amazing views at Mount Wilson Observatory.
Take a road trip to visit the famous Mount Wilson Observatory complex outside Pasadena, approximately 47 miles from Aliento. The museum grounds are open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, with guided public tours on the weekends at 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. Be sure to stop by the Cosmic Café for sandwiches, treats and souvenirs. For nighttime viewing, the observatory hosts star parties throughout the year. You can also reserve a private viewing through one of the telescopes — the very instruments used by astronomy legends like Edwin Hubble. We think Mom deserves it!
Hopefully, you’ve found these creative Mother’s Day ideas helpful! Of course, any mother would love simply spending time together as a family, such as hiking Paseo Aliento Trail out to the ridgeline or swimming and hanging out at The Terrace at Aliento.
