Springtime is a great time to get out and explore with the whole family. Whether you’re looking to have a peaceful picnic in a park or chase the kids around in an energetic game of laser tag, you have plenty of options to choose from near Aliento. Check out these ideas for some family-friendly fun in Santa Clarita this spring.
Gibbon Conservation Center
You don’t have to go to the circus to see some of the world’s greatest acrobats. The youngest members of your family will look up in awe as they watch apes swing from branch to branch at the Gibbon Conservation Center, which is just 10 miles from Aliento. Gibbons, which can leap distances of 40 feet at speeds up to 35 mph, are among the most endangered of all apes. The center is open every Saturday and Sunday from 9:30 a.m. to noon; a guided tour begins around 10 a.m.
Tip: Try to visit the center early in the morning to hear the gibbons’ famous (and loud) singing.
Vasquez Rocks Natural Area and Nature Center
If the stunning rock formations at Vasquez Rocks Natural Area and Nature Center look familiar to you, it’s probably because you’ve seen them before. The picturesque park has been featured in a number of hit movies and TV shows, including “Star Trek.” Located less than 15 miles from Aliento in the high desert area near Agua Dulce Springs, Vasquez Rocks features 932 acres of breathtaking beauty and is a great spot for a family hike or picnic. It’s open daily from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. through Sept. 15.
Old Town Newhall
Santa Clarita’s premier arts and entertainment district is full of fun, food and festivities for the entire family. At Old Town Newhall, located 6 miles from Aliento, you can take a walking tour of the area’s historic spots, pick up some fresh fruit and veggies at the farmers market, explore the William S. Hart Park and Museum or simply enjoy a good meal at one of the many dining options. (Or do it all if you have the time!) Be sure to support your local businesses and check out the unique shops while you’re there.
Don’t be surprised if you hear the clip-clop of horse hooves behind you at the Quigley Canyon Open Space, just 6 miles from Aliento. Many locals take advantage of the wide trails and serene setting to ride their horses. The hiking trails are good for all skill levels, with four loops to choose from, none of which are longer than 1.5 miles. The kids will love seeing wildlife like deer and rabbits, and the adults will enjoy the spectacular views. Your four-legged family members are welcome as well; just remember, all dogs must be kept on a leash.
Mountasia Family Fun Center
If you’re looking for kid-friendly fun, nothing beats Mountasia Family Fun Center. This huge entertainment complex, which is less than 5 miles from Aliento, features outdoor attractions like miniature golf, go-karts and bumper boats, as well as indoor fun like laser tag, video games and rock climbing. You can choose from a number of package deals or pay as you play. Before you head out, take note that there are age and height restrictions for some of the activities.
