7 At-Home Workout Tips

Posted on 13 May, 2020

As we all get used to spending our days at home, you may be thinking about how you can fit regular workouts into your space and daily routine. At Aliento, we’re all about easy, healthy living and the power of fresh air. So, we’ve gathered our top seven at-home workout tips to help you get your heart pumping and stay on track.

Assign a workout space.
If you don’t already have an area you feel comfortable working out in, find one that works for you and your needs. Homes at Aliento have spacious living areas and flex rooms, so you can create a home gym, yoga retreat or even a meditation zone. (Brain workouts are important, too!)

Start with a warmup.
No matter what kind of exercise you do, it’s a good idea to start with a warmup. Different from just stretching, warmups get the blood flowing and increase your body’s temperature at a safe pace. They also get oxygen to more muscles and help prevent injuries. Start with a brisk walk, light jog, or a few sets of lunges, squats and pushups.

Roll out the mat.
Yoga or Pilates? If yoga is your go-to workout, change things up with a new focus or intention and get stretching with an online yoga video. Or, if you want to give Pilates a try, this 30-day guide to beginner Pilates exercises will get you started. Remember to use your breath patterns.

Get in some cardio.
An easy way to get your cardio in is to go for a run or a jog outside. The Paseo Aliento trail has three miles of paths and is a great way to get some fresh air while you get your heart pumping – at a safe social distance, of course. But if you’d rather stay closer to home, an inside stairs workout will also raise your heart rate.

Reimagine what weights could be.
You don’t need free weights or lots of equipment to exercise at home. You can start a regimen of bodyweight-only exercises for strength training. Or, utilize some everyday items. CrossFit At Home has workout videos that use jugs of water instead of weights.

Get into a routine.
Building a daily routine will help ensure you’ll have time to get your workout in. Plus, there are a lot of other benefits of routines, including reducing stress and anxiety. Write your schedule down or set reminders on your phone so you stick to your plan. There are also a lot of fitness apps that can help you stay on track.

Cool it down.
After your workout, do a cooldown and some stretches. Since your body is already warmed up and relaxed, it will be easier to flex your muscles and get the most out of stretching. Do a light exercise and focus on your breathing to bring your heart rate down slowly. This could also be a good time for a short yoga or meditation practice.
