Organizing Your Kitchen for Back-to-School

Posted on 14 Sep, 2020

September is here, which means school is back in session. Whether your children are attending school in person or through distance learning, it’s safe to say this school year will look different from years past. One way you can help set your students up for success is by organizing your kitchen. After all, it’s the most used room in the home – and it’s likely the place where many homework sessions and school projects will happen. Here are a few kitchen organization tips to get you prepared for this school year, and set the whole family up for success.

Start fresh.
It always helps to start out the school year with a clean slate. In the kitchen, this means a couple things. You may want to go through your cabinets, pantry and refrigerator and throw out any expired items. Then, make a list of anything that needs to be restocked. It’s a good idea to keep your favorite recipes’ ingredients well-stocked for quick weeknight dinners, like these easy crockpot meals you can prep the night before. This is also a good time to give the fridge a good scrubbing, so everything is clean and easy to find.

Stock up on essential snacks.
The foods we eat can have a big impact on our brain health, so be sure to feed those young minds healthy snacks! Keep the kitchen stocked with plenty of snacks for the school day. You may want to keep them on the kitchen counter in a fun basket or clear storage container so they’re easy for kids to either grab on their way out the door or between online classes. Some brain-boosting foods include berries, nuts, seeds and whole grains.

Designate workspaces for everyone.
Think about your children’s days and what kind of spaces they’ll need for their usual school activities. Will multiple children need to work in separate rooms? What worked or didn’t work last semester? For in-home students, it’s nice to have workspaces near a window that offers natural light and a break from looking at a computer screen. Clear off counter space in the kitchen for school projects, and keep supplies such as scissors, glue and markers close by in bins that can easily be moved out of the way. Make any seating or chair adjustments for kids who will be sitting at the kitchen table or island.
